England North
Album of b&w photographs (many from postcards) with descriptive captions, short bibliography, 96 pp, sewn paperback, edges of covers slightly creased, otherwise in very good condition, Richard Stenlake Publishing (Ochiltree, Ayrshire) 1996
27.1 x 20.4 cm, 360g, ISBN 1 87207 473 1
The photographs mostly date from between 1880 and 1930, and concentrate more on locals and tourists seen in a spectacular landscape than on the landscape itself. There are a few modern photographs, notably those of the Campbell family’s ill-fated attempts on the world water speed record on Coniston Water, and a picture from the 1995 drought showing the remains of the drowned village of Mardale, now under the Haweswater reservoir.
Surprisingly, the book is still available from the publisher at £13.95.
