The preface states the book is written “for the pleasure of tree lovers who recognise the spiritual as well as the aesthetic and economic value of trees to human life.”

The Men of the Trees (which still exists) was an ecological society set up by Richard St. Barbe Baker in 1920, and was dedicated to the conservation and planting of trees, not just in Europe but throughout the world.   A 1955 profile of the author from “The Observer”, included with the book, states, “By prosaic everyday standards, he is something of an eccentric; his unorthodox views and the frankly emotional overtones he brings to his subject often alarm and embarrass scientists and officials.”  That sounds just what we need today . . . .
