It now seems unbelievable that a national treasure like the TV series Dad’s Army could have been so little thought of that the BBC would even consider recycling its videotapes to save money. Six episodes were “wiped” in this way, though one was recovered as it had been recorded on 35mm film (and the BBC’s film department never throw anything away!).
After this book was published two further missing episodes were recovered, in 2001, but the remaining three episodes are still missing. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dad%27s_Army_missing_episodes.
The BBC DVD of the First Series includes the three recovered episodes from the Second Series, and a documentary on how the two episodes were recovered in 2001.
This book, however, is now out of print!
