Originally published in 1987 with the title 'Gods and Graven Images', but this edition has been completely rewritten with many new illustrations, and claims to “incorporate radical new interpretations arising from the latest discoveries and researches.”  The book deals mainly with the ancient chalk figures, relegating those that can be dated after 1700 to a small appendix.
