‘Swatchways’ are passages or channels of water lying between sandbanks, or between a sandbank and the shore. The word is mainly used in the Thames Estuary and up the east coast – see the map below.
The title of the biography harks back to Griffiths’ best-known book, ‘The Magic of the Swatchways’, written in 1932 and still in print – though, as always these days, only in paperback.
See the description below from the rear of the dustwrapper, and the information about the author from the dustwrapper flaps.
This book was also published in paperback, but all editions are now out of print.
