That is, the part of France between Lake Geneva and the Alps, including Chamonix and Mont Blanc. See below the description from the book’s rear cover. The routes are intended to be undertaken in some form of motorised transport, but each individual route has a hike attached.
However, this book is primarily distinguished for its splendidly florid and pompous turn of phrase. I suspect what has happened is that the author has had his French text translated by somebody to whom English was not the first language (in fact probably the third or fourth). See the specimen page below - you will note "Glowing with snows more immaculate than any human dreams of whiteness". This book will provide hours of simple amusement to the English reader, quite apart from its undoubted practical use.
