The compiler was a lecturer and later a Fellow of St Catherine’s College at Cambridge University, and specialised in extracting passages and fragments from medieval texts to illustrate life at the time. While the passages in foreign languages have been translated into modern English, the majority of the remaining passages are in the original medieval English. See below an extract from the compiler’s preface.
