That is, the part of the South Downs in what is now West and East Sussex. The author’s “day job” was as a shopkeeper in Worthing, just down the road from my grandparents’ house. My grandmother may well have bought groceries from his shop. He died in 1960.
See the description from the dustwrapper flaps. The book is a re-set and extra-illustrated edition of extracts from Wills’ 1938 book ‘Shepherds of Sussex’, now extremely rare – see specimen page below.
Long out of print.
