This was, surprisingly, first published in 1869 and went through two subsequent editions up to 1910. The author says that the whole book has now been revised and the illustrations increased. The author managed to finish his revision before his death the following year.

The innumerable American paperback reprints of this book appear to be of the earlier editions, as for some arcane US copyright reason they are only able to republish books printed before 1923.
