“Geodetic” was the form of lattice-work construction (see photo below) invented by Barnes Wallis, of bouncing-bomb fame.  The aircraft could then be covered with fabric rather than metal, and proved capable of absorbing a great deal of punishment.  The only thing the Wellington could not do was tow a glider, in which case the fuselage stretched “like lazy tongs”!
